Europe Day 3: Dublin, Ireland

We ate breakfast at the hostel on day 3 & went to the bank and mall to get Rose new shoes. Exciting, I know!

Then we took the Luas light rail to Kilmainham Gaol (jail). It's an old prison built in 1796, & we took a tour & learned all about its history. The photo below is the newer part of the gaol... the older part had really horrible conditions. The cells were basically bare rooms made of stone - very cold & damp.

We also had lunch at a cafe, then took a 2.5 hour bus ride to Belfast, Northern Ireland. It's actually a part of the United Kingdom, so I can say I've been to 1 more country :) However, they don't even check your passport or have you check in anywhere when going between the two countries. The biggest difference between them is that Northern Ireland  uses Pounds & Ireland uses Euro.

Our hostel in Belfast gave us a private room! After our previous 20-bed set-up, we joked that this was so luxurious! In reality, the room consisted of a bunk bed, chair, sink and mirror. We had a shared bathroom across the hall.

We went to eat dinner at a pub down the street & got some delicious fish & chips, beer, & got to listen to more live Irish music. Sorry I didn't take many pictures on day 3. Day 4 will make up for that, plus some!

Europe Day 2: Dublin, Ireland

I arrived in Dublin at 8 a.m., went through customs, picked up my suitcase and found Rose outside waiting for me!

We took a bus to her neighborhood and walked across the Dublin City University campus to her apartment. It was move out day, and they had to be out by 11 that morning. I had the pleasure of meeting 2 of her 4 roommates and a few more friends - all so nice! It was great to see where and how she's been living this year.

After meeting everyone and helping with some last minute trash hauling, we took a bus to the city centre where our hostel was located. Over the 2-week vacation we stayed at Shining Hostel 4 separate times. The location is fantastic although the building is rather run-down. It worked for us though.

This was my first hostel experience and I didn't really know what to expect. At this one, there are about 10 bunkbeds (20 beds total) in a large room where you sleep and keep your stuff. Each bed has a comforter and pillow sitting on it, and the hostel staff gives you a sheet, duvet cover and pillowcase to use for your stay. Then when you check out you return those items but leave the comforter and pillow on the bed. This was something I didn't expect as a hostel virgin!

On this vacation I traveled like a poor college student for sure! You'll see later that there was at least one night where we didn't stay in a hostel at all, but slept while en route to our next destination... oy!

Back to day 2... we went out to lunch in Temple Bar (I'm not sure if everyone thinks this or it was just me... but I wasn't aware that Temple Bar is the name of an area as well as an actual bar. We had lunch in the neighborhood, not the bar.) Rose showed me around Dublin:
Liffey River

Christ Church Cathedral (Built in 1030... almost 1000 years ago!)

We went to St. Stephen's Green to relax for a while and 2 of her friends - 1 from France, 1 from Spain - met us there.

We all proceeded to Temple Bar (The bar this time!) for drinks and live Irish music!

The girls left after a while but Rose and I stayed at Temple Bar, then decided to find another pub and ended up at Gogarty's. I don't know how I did it... by this time it was well after 3 a.m. in California and I was going on 4ish hours of sleep! But I was immediately adjusted to the time change, thankfully.

At Gogarty's we met some British friends who were in Dublin for a stag party (bachelor party) and spent the night drinking, hanging out and listening to music - first traditional Irish, then regular DJ music.

At the end of the night we also stopped by Fitzsimon's, but didn't stay long because we had had a lot of drinks by that point! After that we grabbed some food at a convenience store and walked back to the hostel for rest!

3 months to go

I’ve got it under control! At least I hope I do. The wedding is in exactly 3 months… that is crazy to me. Maybe if I write out everything I have to do ASAP I won’t feel overwhelmed.
  • Finish & send invitations
  • Find a hair stylist
  • Order chairs for the ceremony
  • Make “reserved” signs for the ceremony, and some other random signs
  • Finalize our ceremony wording
  • Make ceremony programs
  • Payments and instructions to... everyone!
  • Get my dress fitted
  • Make & attend final meetings with:
    • Coordinator
    • Reception venue
    • Bakery
  • Buy:
    • My jewelry
    • My shoes
    • My makeup & other accessories
    • James’ suit
    • Ties for James, the best man & my dad
    • James’ shoes
    • Maid of honor’s dress
    • Wine for the reception
    • Guestbook & pens
    • Favors
    • Thank you notes
    • Gifts for some special people
Alright – that’s not too bad. I just need to spend every weekend for the rest of the summer going through that list and I’m good!

My 24th birthday

Yesterday was my 24th birthday and I feel loved! In addition to the dozens of texts, emails and Facebook messages I received, James had the most gorgeous vase of flowers and a balloon delivered to my office in the morning. Thank you sweetie!

I went out to lunch at Mikuni Sushi with the girls at work, then for dinner James and I went to Chicago Fire. The cutest baby was sitting at the table next to us and loved James... it was hilarious because he looked just like him! I felt like I was looking at our future child!

And, I received the most thoughtful cards (yep 3 of them!) from my mom in the mail the other day… thank you to all who made my birthday so special!

Europe Day 1: Travel

I'm going to recap my recent vacation day-by-day, because if I didn't it would be a monster of a post that would be way too long and boring. The first day is not that exciting - sorry!

James and I left the house bright and early on a Saturday morning to get me to the airport in San Francisco. I had just enough time to wait in line, run to the ATM, exchange my dollars for euro, and quickly eat breakfast before boarding my flight to Chicago. The first flight took about 3 hours, then I had a 2 hour layover.

As the plane pulled onto the runway for takeoff from Chicago O'Hare, I'm fairly certain that I saw President Obama's Air Force One! That's probably the most exciting thing that happened that day.

The flight to Dublin lasted 8 hours and I tried to sleep for as much of it as I could, since I'd be arriving at 8 a.m. local time. Everyone says that the best way to get adjusted to a time change is to stay awake until it's nighttime in your new time zone. Ireland is 8 hours ahead of California, so I knew it would be a long day. If I went to bed at 9 p.m. there, it would be like my 1 p.m.

I got probably 4 hours of sleep in on the plane... then the real vacation began!

More to come soon!

Goal #15: Go on a vacation with my sister(s)

I'm back!! Other than being sick the last few days, the trip was fabulous! I'll have lots of pictures and stories to share soon, but for now I'm resting.

Bye USA!

I'm on my way to San Francisco International Airport this morning, & will arrive in Dublin at midnight California time/8 a.m. Ireland time. I can't believe my trip is finally here! I'll have tons of photos to share when I return.

Another trip update: Our older sister Samantha is meeting us in Rome! Then for Rome, Athens & Santorini all three of us sisters will be traveling together :D

See you in two weeks!

P.S. If my math is correct, when I get back that ticker over there   ---> will say 98 days until our wedding. Double digits!

P.P.S. Check out Rose's blog for more vacation recaps :)
