Leia's birth story

This post might be TMI... I liked reading positive (and detailed) natural birth stories when I was pregnant, so I wanted to put mine out there too.

Sunday, August 5, 2012 - 10 days past my due date.

11 a.m.
I noticed contractions that seemed more strong and regular than I'd had previously (I'd had Braxton Hicks for the past month).

12 p.m.
I started casually timing them - just looking at the clock when I felt a contraction while watching TV. They were 3 minutes apart, which is really close.

1:30 p.m.
I decided that this is probably labor, and I laid down in bed to do my Bradley Method relaxation techniques to lessen the pain. While I did that, James cleaned the house and finished packing everything for the hospital.

3 p.m.
Contractions were strong enough that I started moaning through them - deep noises seemed to help. James came in to help me mentally relax, rub my back and give me drinks between contractions. My lower back was hurting during contractions as well. He put a heating pad on some of the time too.

4:30 p.m.
I threw up. It was getting increasingly hard. I got really hot, so James helped me by putting cold washcloths on my forehead and lower back.

One of the hardest parts of labor was when I had to pee. I was trying to drink a lot of iced tea and water throughout labor so that baby and I would both be healthy and hydrated, and because I wanted to avoid needing an IV in the hospital.

Drinking so much meant that I tried to empty my bladder often, since I'd learned that a full bladder can push on the uterus and make the pain worse. But something about the way baby was laying made it so hard to pee. And sitting upright was really uncomfortable, so that was one of the worst parts.

5:20 p.m.
We thought about going to the hospital, but weren't sure. Our goal was to labor at home as long as we could. I started standing during contractions and rocking my hips. It was the only thing I could think of that might help (but it didn't really!). I threw up again.

6 p.m.
James called the hospital and told them we'd be coming soon-ish. The nurse he spoke with actually recommended delaying a little longer since we wanted to go natural.

6:40 p.m.
We left for the hospital. James was starting to feel overwhelmed with being the only one taking care of me, and felt bad when he had to leave me to take care of anything (like loading the car).

At no point in my labor did I think "I want an epidural," which honestly surprises me. I think I somehow forgot that it was an option. However, while walking out to the car, I do remember thinking "If I'm not at least 5 or 6 cm I'm going to die!"

On the ride there, contractions hurt a lot and I didn't like being in a seated position. But I somehow fell asleep between them (I don't understand it either)!  Maybe it was the movement of the car. Not sure, but my eyes were closed the whole drive. I opened them maybe 2 or 3 times on the ride.

7 p.m.
We arrived at the hospital. James left the car with all our stuff at the main entrance, and we walked up to Labor and Delivery (which is pretty darn far!). I tried to stop during contractions a few times, but he hurried me along - I think he really wanted some more support people around.

By the time we got there, I was pretty loud. I started labor making low, controlled noises like I learned in Bradley classes. Now I'd lost that control and was yelling "owww!"

In Triage, they made me do 20 minutes of fetal monitoring before seeing how dilated I was. That was another of the hardest parts - I had to sit still in a chair with wires hooked up to my belly and couldn't do much about my extreme discomfort.

When the nurse finally checked me, she said I was 8 cm! I yelled, "Thank God! I can actually do this!"

8 p.m.
We walked down the hall to my delivery room. I didn't give a crap about anything - I heard a nurse tell James to close my gown in the back and he was like "It's fine." I could not have cared less and he knew it!

They had a tub set up for me, as James had requested, and I got right in. While I was in the tub, my water broke. I didn't realize it at the time - I thought I was peeing, but later when they were asking for their records I realized that must have been it.

With me in the tub, James had to run downstairs to re-park our car and bring up our bags. I was also asked if I wanted a hep lock or IV, and I asked if I could just decline altogether since I was so close - they obliged.

I started to realize that it felt better if I pushed during a contraction. The nurse told me not to because they didn't know if I was fully dilated. I still did a little - bad me.

8:15 p.m.
James got back from parking the car. Nurse had me sit on my hands and knees for a little bit, because she said it would help baby get into a better position to come out. I did it even though it was way uncomfortable.

8:40 p.m.
I got out of the tub and into the bed. I don't know if it's a labor thing, or just getting out of a warm tub into air conditioning, but I was freezing! I couldn't stop shaking and chattering my teeth. A nurse covered me with tons of blankets and it eventually stopped.

I was checked and told I was at 10 cm! They said I could push whenever I wanted. Nobody coached me or counted, they just let me decide how to do it. Though, they did tell me not to yell so much while pushing because it took away my power. I still did, but not as much.

During pushing, time kind of slowed down for me. It was so strange. All the sudden I was calm and had the presence of mind to do things like turn to James and say "I can't believe this is happening!" and I even asked that they use a warm compress to prevent tearing (it didn't work). I'm so surprised I thought to say that and was so calm/normal.

8:45 p.m.
At first I pushed hard, but then I realized that I should "labor down" a little - just light pushing and letting my body do the work. Just a few minutes later, we could see the head with dark hair! They set up a mirror for me to see everything - that was certainly not a flattering way to see myself, but amazing to watch at the same time.

I didn't feel the "ring of fire" that other women describe when baby is crowning. I felt stretching, but contractions were way worse than that. I also didn't feel when I tore at all.

8:58 p.m.
Leia was born!! They put her on my belly (I think the cord was too short to reach my chest) and she cried after a few seconds. James said "It's a girl!" and I was so surprised! I said "It's a girl! Oh my God! Are you sure?!" I cried, though James and I were both surprised that we didn't cry more - we agree that it was just so overwhelming and surreal that it was too much to even comprehend!

9:10 p.m.
We got a few minutes of skin-to-skin time, but unfortunately not the whole hour that's normally standard at our hospital.

Because I pushed for such a short time, baby girl had some fluid in her lungs that they had to suction out. Normally going through the birth canal pushes the gunk out of you, but she went through so fast that it didn't quite happen!

They took her to the nursery to make sure her breathing was fine, and daddy went with her. They were gone for about 30 minutes - James brought me back some pictures soon, which was so awesome of him.

9:15 p.m.
Meanwhile, the midwife told me that I was bleeding more than normal and they needed to give me a shot of Pitocin in the leg to stop it. They would have put it in an IV if I'd had one.

The shot didn't work, and all the sudden the room was filled with 8-10 doctors, nurses and an anesthesiologist hooking up an IV. They were all doing different things... they gave me more Pitocin, Cytotec and an antibiotic through the IV, and the midwife and a doctor were using all sorts of tools to clean out my uterus. There was even mention of needing a blood transfusion (though to be less dramatic, they said that I probably wouldn't need one).

I really don't know why I wasn't more scared - I guess I just knew that Leia was okay since I had heard her cry, so I was fine with whatever was happening.

9:30 p.m.
Finally, things calmed down. My baby girl was brought back to me and we got to have some alone time as a family of 3. Later that night, James called our family members and our moms and my sister came to meet her around midnight.

Minus the part that happened after she was born, Leia's birth was exactly how we planned. I'm so proud that I was able to do it naturally! I couldn't have done it without my amazingly supportive husband, who was there every step of the way, working hard to help me reach my goal.

Goal #36: Pay off my student loans

As of today, I'm 100% debt free! And will be that way until we get a mortgage later this year. It feels good!

I had been making regular payments - twice the minimum, but it still would have taken several more years to pay off my two student loans.

We have decided to get an FHA or, more likely a VA home loan (James was in the Marines), meaning that we don't have to use much of our savings for a large down payment on a house. So I just paid my loans off to be done with it and avoid paying more interest.

That's two less bills every month (that I can put back into savings)... yay!

Goal #80: Take a zumba class at the gym

On New Years Eve I took advantage of my chance to take a daytime class at the gym and tried zumba for the first time!

It was fun and much harder than I expected. I thought it's just a bit of dancing... piece of cake! So I got there early and did a bit of cardio and weights before even starting the class. I was tired 15 minutes in!

It was fun though. I felt a little stupid doing all the salsa and merengue moves, but I just had to get over it and shake my ass the best I could... it's the only way you'll learn right?

I might take this class again, but I still love my kickboxing more.

Speaking of New Years Eve, that evening we headed to our friends' house for a little party. We ate good food, drank yummy champagne, played games and kissed at midnight. Happy 2011!

Goal #62: Have a girls day with my mother in law

Yesterday was my second and final wedding dress fitting, which I completely forgot to blog about after my first appointment! I picked it up yesterday and it fits perfectly. Previously, it was way too big in the waist and hips. Every time I tried it on I had to convince myself that it would look good again. Seriously, it was horribly unflattering. I took it to Lana's Studio in Carmichael, and it looks much better now!

My sister/maid of honor and James' mom came with me. Rose had to learn how to bustle it, and I just wanted Rita to see it. After we got the dress, Rita and I went to lunch, then the mall to find her a dress for the wedding.

It was a lot of fun shopping! She found not one but two dresses because they were both on sale for great prices... and she got me a bracelet to wear on our wedding day. Every time I go to Macy's for the past few months I look at this bracelet, hoping it's on sale. It still wasn't, but my savvy mother in law had a $10 off coupon making it much better :)

Later in the afternoon we went to a barbeque at our friends' house. The rest of the 3-day weekend will be low key, I'm just going to try to get as organized as possible for the wedding... in 13 days!

Goal #74: Celebrate with James when he passes the PTA exam

My fiance is now a State of California licensed Physical Therapy Assistant :) He passed both tests that were required two weeks ago and received his license last week. To celebrate, we went to see The Undulations on Friday night at Zinfandel Grille. Honestly we would have gone anyway because we love that band, but we turned it into a celebration as well!

We had nachos and margaritas at Rose's house beforehand, then just ordered some appetizers to split at the restaurant. The band recognizes us now because we've been to so many shows, and talked to us. After Zinfandel Grille we went back to Rose's place down the street and hung out until late!

Goal #15: Go on a vacation with my sister(s)

I'm back!! Other than being sick the last few days, the trip was fabulous! I'll have lots of pictures and stories to share soon, but for now I'm resting.

Goal #46: Watch every episode of LOST

The series finale of LOST aired on Sunday, but it was on so freaking late that we DVRed it and watched on Monday (I love DVR!).

The final episode was a bit disappointing for me. I know they want us to draw our own conlcusions, but I don't like that! I want them to tell me exactly what everything meant and exactly what happened. This blog helped explain a lot.

I didn't forget

I haven't been blogging about my 100 goals to accomplish before my 30th birthday lately. Well, that's because I haven't been doing any! But it's not forgotten and it will be completed in the next six years :) In the next several months I plan to check off the following:

6. Visit Ireland

9. Visit Italy

10. Visit Greece

(details on these plans here)

13. Marry James

14. Host a fun, unique wedding

15. Go on a vacation with my sister(s)
(see goals 6, 9 & 10)

40. Fly in a hot air balloon

(this is one thing I'm making sure we do on our honeymoon!)

46. Watch every episode of LOST

(will be completed with the finale on Sunday)

48. Do crafts
(after all these wedding projects [flowers, chalkboards, signs, plus invitations, programs, favors and more coming up], I think this goal can be checked off)

66. Swim in a pool

(at this all-inclusive in Santorini!)

74. Celebrate with James when he passes the PTA exam

89. Visit New York City

(I have a layover there on my way back from Europe, but that doesn't count. I just wanted to add it to the list!)

95. Meet James' extended family
(Thanks to Facebook, I've communicated with several, but will actually get to meet them at our wedding)

And longer term, in the next year I hope/plan to do these as well:

1. Buy a home

2. Paint the interior of our house something other than white

3. Update our home to fit our personality

19. Get back to my weight in high school, and stay there

Goal #56: Go to a Sacramento Kings game

Last night Dad, Mom, James and I went to a Kings game. James suggested it and it was a really good idea for a holiday weekend. The Kings won.

Two goals crossed off the list in two days!

Photo Friday / Goal #58: Thanksgiving at our house!

I took a photo of the table set for Thanksgiving dinner.

Sadly, I don't have one of it covered with food and people.

The day was great. I had such a fantastic time with my family talking, laughing and chosing our secret santa gift exchange recipients! I'm excited to shop for my person!

I also loved cooking everything. It wasn't too hard, but the most challenging part was being organized enough to make everything be done at the same time. Organization is totally my thing!

Everyone said the turkey turned out really well. That was the one thing I had never cooked before and was a little intimidated by, but it was pretty easy. I also made: Mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, sweet corn tomalito, basil bubbles and sausage apple & cranberry stuffing.

My mom brought peach pie, pecan pie and strawberry rhubarb pie. My mother-in-law brought lumpia with sweet & sour sauce and wine.

Host Thanksiving at my house was #58 on my list of goals to accomplish by my 30th birthday. I've now completed 30 of the 100!

Goal #91: Buy a nice camera

Last week I ordered a new camera and it’s here! My old one had a good run, but it was purchased in 2004/2005 and technology has advanced a lot since then. My old Kodak EasyShare produces pictures that are grainy and especially bad if you try to zoom in at all.

I decided that buying a new one before my trip of a lifetime to Europe was an absolute must! After doing a lot of research, I decided on the Canon PowerShot SD1200-IS.

Here’s a little comparison of the picture quality.

My engagement ring with the old camera

My engagement ring with the new camera

I just got it last night so it was hard to test out in our house (it was dark ouside). There wasn't much to take photos of. I'll have to take some real pics before I can really evaluate... this weekend's trip to Santa Cruz is the perfect test :D

Goal #52: Buy flowers at the farmers market

For a while, I've been wanting to arrange the flowers for our wedding myself (with the help of several lovely people to whom I'll be extremely grateful). Florists are crazy expensive, and my thought is "how hard can it be?" I gave it a try on Sunday, since it'll soon be cold and they won't be selling flowers at the farmers market.

My favorite flowers are dahlias:

This arrangement isn't by me. I'm just showing you how pretty dahlias are.

I really wanted to get those, but the first stand we went to didn't have any, so I assumed no one else would either. I just bought some zinnias for $6. It was cheap, that's good, but I was sad when I saw beautiful dahlias later on. Maybe next weekend...

Here's what I did. I've done some reading on what you're supposed to do to make them last longer, and these were the things that I remembered.

First I pulled off all of the leaves.

Then I clipped off the ends of the stems under running water, and put them in a vase with water.

I used half of them to make a bouquet, and half for a centerpiece. The centerpiece is awesome, and exactly what I want. The bouquet needs some practice - but that also has to do with me not loving zinnias. Next time I'll definitely make sure to buy the right type of flowers.

Here are the centerpieces:

Thank you Ikea for 100 tealights for $4!

I love them! They'll look even better with roses and dahlias. I don't really have detailed instructions. I just cut the stems to the right length, and put them in the mason jars (which is what I want to use at our wedding. I need to start collecting 3 different sizes for each table). It was easy :)

For the bouquet, I taped together groups of 3-4 flowers with floral tape (err, duct tape. I need to buy floral tape).

Once I had enough smaller groups of flowers, I taped them all together into a larger bouquet at the top and bottom.

This bouquet has about 30 zinnias and it's smaller than I'd like. I would have added more but I wanted to save enough for the vases.

I wrapped the stems with ribbon that I had already, and secured it with a pin. I'll buy prettier ribbon later.

I think it went pretty well for my first go at DIY flowers! I'm confident that this will work out and we'll save hundreds of dollars.

I spent about an hour or less on this. I think with more people we should be able to do more centerpieces quickly.

I'm actually looking forward to doing this with my mom - I think it'll be fun :)

P.S. click here for my list of 100 goals to accomplish before my 30th birthday (buy flowers at the farmers market was one of them).

Update: I put these together Sunday and it's now Tuesday. They still look good. Yay :)

Our Pacific Northwest vacation

We're back! A whole week of exploring, visiting and driving. I was not ready to go back to work today!

I apologize in advance for the lengthy post. This blog is my journal so I'm going to add in all the details :)

Like I mentioned before, we have been looking forward to this trip for a few years, both because I wanted to see Oregon and Washington, and because James has family in Washington that it was about time I met.

We drove all the way to Seattle on Saturday, leaving about 6 AM. James' Corolla has now driven the entire west coast of the US - San Diego (2 years ago) to Seattle!

We arrived at my parents' house for breakfast around 8 AM. Their house is on the way up, so I wanted to see them for a little bit and breakfast was the perfect excuse.

After an hour at my parents' house and consuming what I declared the best breakfast I'd ever eaten (waffles, fruit, bacon, eggs, biscuits... my mom is the best), we drove the 12 (!) hour remainder to Seattle. We stopped for bathroom breaks and gas several times (I don’t like people pumping my gas for me in Oregon… it feels weird), but otherwise drove straight through. We never even got hungry for lunch, which was unusual for us.

We got into Seattle Saturday evening and after getting lost for a while (which happened a lot in downtown Seattle, ugh...) we checked into our hotel, the Mediterranean Inn. It was very nice, but nothing extra special. Sunday we walked around the area near our hotel, which includes Seattle Center.

We ended up walking to the Space Needle and went up.

A view from the top

Then we walked along the waterfront and to Pike Place Market where we had lunch.

Later that night we went to James’ sister Chandra’s house, where I met her, James’ brother-in-law and two nieces for the first time. I love, love, love his family! The girls are so sweet and they’re all super nice. We both agreed that hanging out with all of them was by far the best part of the trip. I won’t post their pictures because I’m not sure how Chandra feels about that, but trust me they’re gorgeous.

On Monday we spent more time with the family. We had a picnic at a cute park at Chambers Bay and went for a long walk on the trail there.

Tuesday James and I took a day trip to Victoria, British Columbia. We took a ferry from Seattle to Victoria that took about 2 and a half hours.

Once in Canada, we got detained in customs! We had to go in a separate room and they took our passports and phones and asked us a bunch of questions. They were nice enough and it only lasted 5 or 10 minutes... but why us? We were just on vacation! So strange.

We took a bus to Butchart Gardens, on the recommendation of blog friend Amber. They were beautiful and I’m glad we went simply because I really wanted to go to Canada but had no clue what to do there. However, I don’t feel like the experience was worth the $30pp admission price. That’s a bit much. Oh, and the ferry was over $100pp. The Canada day was definitely our most expensive day. But you have to have at least one when you’re on vacation, right?

Butchart Gardens did allow for some great photos:

After the gardens we walked around town and did a little shopping, then had dinner before catching the ferry back to Seattle.

The sunset over Puget Sound

On Wednesday we slept in a little, then had breakfast at Mecca Cafe because it was a block from our hotel. The service was rather crappy, but OMG the bacon was the best I've ever had. I've been dreaming about it ever since.... yummmm. Okay, pull yourself together... we hung out with the family at their house for the rest of the day.

Thursday was the day we left Seattle for Portland, but first we had breakfast with James’ family and babysat his niece for a few hours. He rarely gets to see his family and he’s so happy when he gets the chance. We won’t be able to see them again until our wedding next year :(

After a lunch of PB&J (which Laurel described as “amazing,” hehe), we drove the 3ish hours to Portland and checked into the Red Lion on the River at Jantzen Beach. We loved the hotel – big room, lots of free parking, and free Internet. The bathroom was like 3 times the size of ours at home, making me long for a bigger house!

We went out for a nice dinner at Touche in the Pearl District. It was sadly our only nice dinner on the trip because we ate with family most of the time.

Friday was our only full day in Portland. We went to Washington Park – so lush and green! I love Portland!

We walked around the park and found the Holocaust Memorial and Portland Rose Garden.

After that, we walked around downtown a little more and went to Powell's Books, a HUGE local bookstore. I ended up with 6 books that I’m excited to get through!

Reviews coming soon!

On Saturday we drove home, and coming back seemed twice as long as the trip up! It took us 8 hours to get back to my parents’ house, where we stopped again for a short visit. We got to have some of my brother Tom’s birthday cake from the previous day. Happy 20th birthday Tom!

Then it was 2 more hours until we were back home recovering! I’m glad we came back Saturday so I had all day Sunday to relax before returning to work.

Part of my desire to visit Seattle and Portland was that for a while now I've thought that moving to one of these cities would be fun to do, someday. I've lived in Northern California my whole life, and maybe I'd like to relocate one day for a change of pace.

After this trip, I'm now confident that I don't want to live in Seattle, but would love Portland. The suburbs of Seattle are nice, I could do that. I'll keep that info in the back of my mind for the future. I really love Sacramento as well, and would be happy staying here forever... but if the chance ever arises.

There you have it, my short recap of our vacation! Goals accomplished on this vacation:

23. Take a road trip through the Pacific Northwest; visit
24. Portland,
25. Seattle, and
26. Vancouver. (I didn't know we'd decide on Victoria instead... gonna consider #26 done)
64. Go hiking.
85. Spend a day with James' neices.
86. Spend a day with James' sister.

Goal #50: Design a web site for my dad's business

Okay I've actually had this done for a long time, but I never posted it because I'm not that proud of the work. I've never done anything like this before and it's obviously very much in progress, but here it is:

If you know anyone who needs solar energy or construction work done on their home, farm or business in Northern California - give my dad a call! He's awesome and has been in the construction business for way longer than I've been alive. Email Info@OakTreeSolarEnergy.com if you have any questions... or leave a comment and I'll get back to you ASAP!

James' 30th birthday

Yesterday was James’ big 3-0! We celebrated by spending the weekend in San Francisco. I've been to the city tons of times, but I keep discovering new things and places. It really is an awesome place.

Saturday we went to Baker Beach for a while, checked into our hotel and walked around exploring.

Sunday we met my dad (whose birthday is tomorrow) and sister by the water for tailgating before the Giants game. It was HOT but fun.

Go to a Giants game was #55 on my list of goals to accomplish before my 30th birthday. As of today I've crossed 19 goals off of my list. Woo hoo :D

Happy birthday James, Dad and Victoria!!

Goal #94: Go to the movies with James

We rarely go to the movies. I already knew this, but realized even more when I saw that I wrote this list in February and haven’t seen a movie with James since then. Weird.

Last night we went on a nice little date. First Chicago Fire. Yes, again… I can’t get enough of that heavenly restaurant. Then we went to see Transformers, which we both knew I would hate, but I went for James. I found it extremely boring.

I recently realized that we have a lot of fun things coming up, and that’s exciting!

  • 4th of July – don’t know what our plans are, but it’s at least a 3-day weekend!
  • The week after that – our 3 year anniversary!
  • The next weekend – James’ 30th birthday! We’re going to San Francisco for the weekend and going to a Giants game.
  • August – weeklong vacation to Seattle! I’ve been waiting for this for a long, long time.
  • Sometime in July/August – Yosemite with Rose.

What a great summer. I can’t believe it’s almost July already!

Goal #31: See The Lion King live

Last night I saw The Lion King at Sacramento’s Community Center Theater and loved it! Everyone always raves about how great it is, and I completely agree. The actors are SO impressive with their ability to sing and dance, especially the children who played young Simba and Nala. They’re only 11 years old and crazy talented!

I loved, loved, loved this show, and I said it last time I went to one, but I need to go to more live shows! This summer I want to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Altar Boyz at Music Circus. Can’t wait!

I went with Rose and beforehand we went to Capitol Garage. They have some really good happy hour deals - $3.50 long islands, $3 margaritas, $2.50 well drinks... but the appetizers ($3-4) weren't great. I may return soon for the drink specials, though. Their happy hour lasts until 7:00 too, while a lot end at 6:00.

In other news, I'm loving the Wii Sports that James got me for my birthday! Tennis is my favorite. Golf and bowling are a lot of fun. I totally suck at baseball, and boxing is hard! I thought I'd love boxing since I'm so into kickboxing, but it's hard to get the hang of the game. I played Wii tennis Tuesday and my back is still a little sore! It can be a pretty good workout. Better than nothing, anyway.

A busy weekend

This weekend was a lot of fun! I was able to see my Aunt Karen for the first time in years and hang out with all 3 of my siblings.

Chevy’s on the river on Saturday.

Sunday we had brunch at Bistro 33 – good food, okay service – and walked to Capitol Park, followed by a Rivercats game (goal #57).

What I was not able to do was laundry, and man do I need to... but I just don't feel like it tonight
