The Biggest Loser Finale

I lost about half a pound this week. My total lost is 10 pounds – double digits, people!

This was the last week of our Biggest Loser competition at work. The biggest loser lost 13.3 pounds. Way to go, M!

I’m going to keep trying to lose weight until I get to my weight in high school. The problem with that is I’m not really sure what that was. I think it was about 10 – 15 pounds ago. Let’s just say 15. I'll be happy then.

I’ll start updating my weight loss progress monthly rather than weekly, so as to avoid becoming obnoxious with the weight posts. My next update will be at the end of May.

One Lovely Blog Award

I’ve been nominated for a blog award! Thanks to Lady Jane for the kind-of-silly-but-still-very-sweet-and-thoughtful “One Lovely Blog” Award.

I’m supposed to:
(a) Accept the award, post it on your blog with the name of the person who has granted the award and his or her blog link.
(b) Pass the award to 15 other blogs that you’ve newly discovered. Remember to contact the bloggers to let them know they have been chosen for this award.

Okay well I don’t even follow 15 blogs, so I’m just going to nominate these women whose blogs I enjoy...

Ryn @ And On We Go... - I just found her blog a few days ago and loved reading about her wedding, house, and other fun stuff. She has a list of 100 goals like me, and I didn't even steal the idea from her.
Cassidy @ Dandelions In The Grass - I know her in real life! Well, I haven't seen her in 5 years, but still. I think we met in 4th grade.
Marissa @ The Shared Journey - She's a professional writer, and her blog has made me cry a time or two. She also makes me want to move to NYC.
Stefanie @ Stefanie's Stories - Stefanie is a really good writer and I'm a loyal reader. Her husband is from the same obscure county in NorCal as me.
Sandy @ Life + Baby - Her son Ethan is so cute! I can tell she's a supersweet person and a great mommy.

Congrats to the newest nominees for the One Lovely Blog award.

Goal #75: Have my brother and his girlfriend over for dinner

This goal was accomplished last night. We just had pizza, but that still counts! We also went to the Sacramento Zoo. It was a fun day.

Before they got here, James and I went to brunch at Zocalo. We’d never been there and it’s really nice. The restaurant is beautiful inside and the potatoes were perfect. I ♥ potatoes for breakfast.

Swing dancing

Friday night we went to Ink, then swing dancing at Midtown Stomp. The dance class was okay but felt a little like we were at a 7th grade dance. “Who’s going to dance with me?” Awkward :) It would be fun to go with James, but he’s not up for it. Lame.

The Biggest Loser, Week 16

I lost 2.2 pounds this week for a total of 9.3! I’ve started counting calories and that makes this a lot easier. I’m more aware of what I eat because I’m writing it all down. I’m trying to stay under 1500 calories a day, but not being very strict about it.

Next week is the end of the competition. I don't think I have a chance at winning. The leader so far is out sick today, but last week she was at 13 pounds lost.

Even after our competition at work is over, I'm going to keep trying to loose weight. It feels great to accomplish a goal, and I know I'll be healthier for it.

Raise awareness for gay marriage rights

This message was sent to me by Equality California. It's an easy way for anyone to participate in the fight for marriage equality. Make sure your ads run on Sunday, May 3!

SOMETHING YOU CAN DO: Want to get the same-sex marriage issue back in the media in a positive way? Want to make a memorable statement in a way that’s never been done before?

DO SOMETHING: Join us in taking over statewide newspapers on Sunday, May 3rd!

WHO: The LGBT community and their allies

WHAT: Taking over statewide classifieds in the CA newspapers

WHEN: The ads will need to be in the May 3rd paper, so make sure you submit yours with enough time to meet the deadline. Make sure your ad is not printed early!

WHERE: All publications in CA that have classifieds

HOW: We need as many people as possible to submit marriage equality classified or personal ads to publications in CA. Be as creative as you can, but make sure it is obvious you are talking about marriage equality. If you can submit multiple ads or hit numerous publications, please do so. We want to make sure no one will miss our ads, so the more that are submitted the better. If you want to submit half page or full page adds, please do that as well. If you can write in a foreign language, please consider submitting ads in newspapers that are published in different languages.

WHY: Classifieds are read by numerous people across the state. This is our chance to reach out to people in a humorous, non-confrontational way that will be remembered. While protests are great, they can’t be the only way we fight back. In order to keep our issue in the media, we will need to be more creative.

Hair

So far there is no hairstylist in this whole city who is able to give me a perfect hair cut. If I could find someone who could do it right, I'd be a loyal customer! But there's always something wrong that I end up fixing myself when I get home. I have no cosmetology experience, but apparently I'm better able to cut my bangs than a stylist.

Today my haircut looks great, but my bangs are effed up! This woman cut them SO uneven. I told her they were uneven, and she said "no, they're straight." If my bangs being uneven is the first thing James notices when I walk in, you know they're really freaking uneven! I fixed them myself, but they're too short because she screwed them up so bad. That was the only way to make them straight.

The search for "my" hair person continues. I'm open to recommendations.

Goal #16: Dry more clothes outside

Now that the weather is consistently gorgeous, I can take advantage and dry my clothes outside. I just have to remember to wash earlier in the day so that they can hang outside for several hours. I always do laundry on weekends anyway, so as long as it's not raining I'll try to do this every time.

This is pretty much the only thing our tiny backyard is good for.

My list of 100 goals is here.

Goal #90: Get more than 1 blog follower

I dedicate this post to the awesome Lady Jane. She's my second blog follower! Her blog is hilarious and she always leaves me super nice blog comments. Thanks!

Recycling

It’s about time I blogged about the issue I’m most passionate about (it’s a tie between recycling and gay marriage rights… but I’ve already blogged about that). I was inspired by these statistics published today in Dear Abby – this is how long it takes specific materials to decompose:

Paper ................................ 2 to 5 months
Orange peels ................... 6 months
Milk cartons .................... 5 years
Filter-tip cigarettes ....... 10 to 12 years
Plastic bags ..................... 10 to 20 years
Leather shoes ................. 24 to 40 years
Plastic containers ........... 50 to 80 years
Disposable diapers ......... 75 years
Tin cans ........................... 100 years
Aluminum cans .............. 200 to 500 years
Styrofoam ....................... Never

Styrofoam – Never! Never?! I cringe when thinking about all the styrofoam out there in the world, taking up space in landfills. It will be there forever! Forever, because people are too lazy to put it in the recycling bin. Or even have a recycling bin.

Our world has limited space, and I’d prefer not to use it as a landfill. Or as little landfill as possible. Every item that’s recycled is one less item that goes into a dump. Even better, it’s remade into another item – thus removing the need to create a new item. Is this not the best idea EVER?

To avoid turning our planet into one big dump, it’s so, so important that we recycle the items we can – paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum. That’s not everything by all means… if you want to know what you can recycle, go here.

Oh, and shopping bags! Before I started using cloth bags, I had hundreds of bags in my house. It was ridiculous. Those bags can be taken back to most stores and placed in a bin at the entrance. Look up there ^ If you throw them away, they will be in our ground for 10 to 20 years. Just bring them back to the store on your way to shop.

I’ve gotten into the habit of using cloth shopping bags though, and I love it. They are much sturdier and can hold more stuff. I keep them in my car and just grab them before I go into a store. My mom got me started with this (thank you!). At first I would always forget to use them, but it eventually became my normal routine. I still forget sometimes, and I hate it because the cloth bags are much easier to carry.

At our house, we recycle almost everything. It’s just as easy as putting it in the trash. Think about most groceries – they’re packaged in a cardboard box. Or your drinks are in a plastic container. That’s all recyclable and can be remade into another box or bottle. Please don’t send it to take up space in a landfill when it doesn’t have to!

Bertolli pasta & sauce

After last night’s dinner I had to dedicate a blog to Bertolli frozen pasta & sauce. I love it so much. I could eat their gigantoni pasta every day but it seems to be discontinued. I can’t find it anywhere, and I’m missing it badly!

If anyone knows where I can purchase it I’d be forever grateful. A close second place, that I also cannot find, is the gnocci. Last night I had spinach and ricotta cheese manicotti. It was good, but crap compared to the gigantoni.

The Biggest Loser, Week 15

I gained about half a pound this week. But I was on vacation - I cannot be expected to diet on vacation! Our long bike rides helped, but we ate a lot of good food.

Death by chocolate cookies

Thanks for the recipe, Mom!

1 package of chocolate chips
1 additional package of chocolate chips or white chocolate chips
3/4 cups brown sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine
2 eggs
1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. Microwave 1 package of chocolate chips in a large bowl for 30 seconds. Stir, microwave an additional 30 seconds, and repeat until smooth. Never microwave chocolate longer than 30 seconds at a time or it will burn. My mom taught me that.
  3. Once the chocolate is melted, stir in the brown sugar, butter/margarine and eggs.
  4. Stir in the flour and baking powder.
  5. Stir in the additional bag of chocolate or white chocolate chips. You can also add 2 cups of nuts.
  6. Bake at 350 for 12-13 minutes. Let the cookies cool on the sheet for a few minutes before you move them.

Another theft

Last week our office was once again the victim of a thief. This time, a mentally ill person walked into our reception area in the morning and took the purse off of our employee’s desk. She had just arrived and gone into another office for a few minutes. This is getting crazy!

We looked everywhere for the purse before deciding that it must have been stolen. The situation was so strange. An hour or so later, someone called our office and said that his friend had stolen the purse, and he left it at a hotel several blocks away. Nothing was even stolen.

Santa Cruz

Here are a few photos from our weekend trip to Santa Cruz.

These are all along the bike path on West Cliff Drive, which is pretty far up there on my list of favorite places in the world.

Our new bike rack worked fabulously and we biked almost everywhere. It was much funner, easier and cheaper than driving. And we burned calories, and I accomplished goal #68 on my list of goals to accomplish before my 30th birthday (take our bikes on a vacation).

This weekend

This weekend was very, very good.

On Friday night I went to Rose’s house and watched The Women, ate popcorn and listened to her 19 year old neighbors pretend like they were in Old School. They think they’re really cool. She called me at 10:30 right before I was about to go to bed. I wasn’t expecting to go anywhere, but I have to take advantage of us living in the same city. We may never again, which is sad because I really love hanging out often.

Saturday James’ mom came over, at my invitation. She brought the dog and we went for a walk with him and I made Greek Orzo Salad and Spicy Garlic Lime Chicken. It was fun.

Sunday we wanted to go to lunch at Chicago Fire – which I highly recommend! It’s a pizza restaurant that has Chicago-style pizza, both deep dish and thin crust. Both are delicious but I was craving the deep dish. We drove over to midtown (I really wanted to bike but James said he was too tired after running at the gym. Lame!) to discover that they’re only open for dinner. What the hell! They’d get plenty of business during the day, judging by the crowd at dinner. So this was terribly disappointing. We went to Thai Basil instead, and that was really good anyway.

I also saw a new restaurant that I really want to try (maybe it’s not new, but I’ve never seen it before) – My BBQ Spot on J St. They don’t seem to have a web site, but it’s sounding really good right now. Too bad I didn’t see it until I was sitting on the patio at Thai Basil :(

The bad thing about this weekend was that I was simply too lazy to work out, other than walking. I’m going tonight after work.

Next weekend will be even better - we're going to Santa Cruz!

Greek Orzo Salad

This pasta salad is my thing to bring to potlucks. I ♥ it and made it tonight for our dinner tomorrow, when James' mom is coming over. It's not cheap to make because it has lots of ingredients that are a little pricey. The whole dish cost over $10. The amounts given here make a huge amount of food though.

1 1/4 cups uncooked orzo pasta
12 oz. marinated artichoke hearts
1 tomato, seeded and chopped
1 cucumber, cubed
1 red onion, chopped
1 cup crumbled feta cheese
1 can black olives, drained
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon lemon pepper
  1. Cook the orzo pasta according to the directions on the box.
  2. Drain artichoke hearts, but save the liquid for later.
  3. In a large bowl, combine pasta, artichoke hearts, tomato, cucumber, onion, feta, olives, parsley, lemon juice, oregano and lemon pepper.
  4. Toss and chill for 1 hour.
  5. Just before serving, stir in the reserved artichoke marinade. If the artichokes you have are not marinaded, you can stir in 1/2 cup of Italian dressing instead.
AllRecipes.com says a serving (1/6 of the recipe) is 348 calories and 10 grams of fat. However, 1/6 of this recipe is a very big serving size. You will be surprised at how much food you end up with.
